Gentoo provides, but currently i support building on way more systems than 
Gentoo.  older Linux distros, OS X, Windows, etc...  it is possible to get 
cmake onto these, it's just a hassle for me and for the people i support.

i understand your desire to not have to maintain autoconf.  but i certainly 
can take care of that aspect and just send patches when necessary.  you could 
even have a dummy configure/Makefile that output "use cmake now" and for 
people who want autotools, they'll get overwritten when generating things.
