Thanks to both of you for the inputs. 

I could successfully detach the driver for a test program using d2xx. I have
not yet tried libftdi.

Now that this aspect (detaching the kernel driver) is a non-issue for me, I
would welcome other inputs on whether to pick libftdi or libftd2xx.
