We are using FTDI4232 devices with faster SPI clocks to drive several
8 SPI/GPIO extenders and 3 ADC with no trouble.

I guess that a FTDI2232 device would be enough. Up to now, I've only
used the 4232/2232 'H' series to drive SPI interfaces, not the lower
models (FTDI2232D for example)
