I know it's been a while since I posted this, but I was finally
galvanised into getting it working, and thought it might be useful to
people on this list.
It simply presents the ftdi device as a posix pty, for machines without
the ftdi kernel module. Specifically, these things don't have it in the
box [and thus need reflashing to use FTDI devices as regular serial
devices]:
